Internet,telephone portable.

Most men and especially women are reluctant to travel solo.
The advantage of traveling alone is I can choose what I want to do when I want to do, without having to consult someone. The feeling of freedom is immense and great.
The fear of loneliness and often the fear itself is the source of traveling in groups or couples, and moreover most of the time with friends.
When we travel alone we have greater chance to meet people which is higher than when we are not solo.We are more accessible to others.
I have been traveling alone for years and I never had any problem (I would say even minor). Something unpleasant happens to the one who is afraid (I've noticed this in Africa)
In addition nowadays we stay in touch with friends and family, thanks to internet and cell phones.

And then we are not always alone ... The proof is below!

Itineraires probables

To drive from the Belarusian border to Yekaterinburg I think of two routes. (Click on maps to enlarge.

* The first one through Smolensk (which I do not want to miss just because of the song of Okudjava "По Смоленской дороге"!
( "on the road to Smolensk), Tver, Rubinsk, Vologda, Kotlas, Ukhta and down the chain of the Ural through Solikamsk, where my Great Grandmother died in a camp during the Czarist era and Perm to Ekaterinburg.

* The second one through Smolensk, Bryansk, Tula (which will allow me to visit the house of Tolstoi at Yasnaya Poliana again), Ryazan ( Dostoievsky's house at Darovoi), Burom, Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Solikamsk and Perm.

To drive from Yekaterinburg to Irkutsk I see only this possibility:

On the way out through Omsk and Novossibirsk(I was there in 1973)
and on the way back through Eastern Siberia via Bratsk,Surgut,Tobolsk and Tumen.

And I do hope that the roads in Siberia will not be as the one shown on the video below from Moscow to Yakutsk!
