Vishki. Aglona. Dagda.

If I was a poet I would write a poem about Vishki. That's what I thought while walking this morning. It seems that this village is inhabited at certain blade hours of the morning. The cemetery is overgrown with weeds and I must take a hundred photos of graves that I have not taken last year, and Klaus, who restored the cemetery in June 2008, has also failed.

I saw some friends, including Nina Sergueivna who lives in the house ,in which Sonia Usdin , my Grand father's niece lived after the war(she survived to the holocaust as evacuated by Staline in Tachkent). It is also the house that I prefered last year when it was still "russian style"

Since I translate the archives of the Rabbinate of Latvia I know quite a lot of shtetls in Latvia. So I left to Aglona ,situated 28 kilometers from here and Dagda, of which I heard as many of the Dagda Jews were killed by bullets Vishki. "This was on one July morning, when Vishki Jews were already evacuated to Daugavpils Ghetto and their belongings were robbed. Ostrov residents noticed, that from Aglona side there was a big crowd moving towards Vishki, followed by a few horse-carts. It soon appeared that these were Dagda Jews, that were also escorted to Daugavpils. People were exhausted and hungry. Some of them were trying to hide in the rye fields, but the guards noticed them. Ostrov locals were warned not to try to hideout the Jews. "

In Aglona, nothing about the past Jewish life is left. Except the place of the murder.

But there is a church that John Paul II visited in 1993 and it is a place of pilgrimage in August for Catholics.

At Dagda two synagogues remain (that's what I was told), the house of a merchant and the Jewish cemetery, which is smaller than Vishki but full of charm, so to speak.

A memorial has been placed in the cemetery as it is also a mass grave .

Et for the gourmands( such as me) today I stopped in a cafe in Aglona and had my beloved "kotlets" with mashed potatoes ,cabbage salad ,kefir and a coke, all for 2.20 lats (1 lat=1.42€).

On the way back I stopped in the same cafe and have been invited to drink vodka by three women who were already drunk at 6 PM but very kind and I had a good time.Of course I didn't drink vodka...as I was driving.

Bonjour Christine! Too bad you couldn't drink vodka with the ladies, they look fun! :-) My thoughts are with you as well, as if we were walking those through Vishki together, as our ancestors did many years ago.
